Leon Pedell, M.D.Welcome to askmemd.com.  I’m Leon Pedell, M.D. and have been a doctor for over 30 years with a specialty in Internal Medicine and a practice in the last decade of predominantly Geriatrics.

Check out the link with my Curriculum Vitae (resume`) for my past history and accomplishments.  As you will readily notice, I am retiring from the active practice of medicine at the end of May, 2008 and it is this change that prompts the creation of this website and my monthly newsletter.

I have always been an adviser to my own patients as well as multitudes of people including friends, family members, and pretty much anyone who wanted advice.  I also have had an extensive career as a medical expert in malpractice cases and probate litigation.  I feel that I know as well or better than anyone the ins and outs of getting the best medical care.  Patients can become confused and dissatisfied with their medical care and health status.  They become exasperated with insurance and the finances of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.  Just as important is the exasperation of doctors within the system and how much time is wasted on all the aspects of their practices that have no relationship to the actual treatment of their patients.  It is my hope that you will find the newsletter, which will cover a wide range of topics, fascinating, but more importantly, essential to achieving better care by becoming your own advocates.  Maybe even my colleagues will want to see how they can be better physicians and health care providers.

One of my favorite hobbies has been reviewing the medical literature that typifies the incredibly fast paced changes in the science and practice of medicine.  I want the newsletter to approach many of the “hot” topics in a practical and informative manner.  In fact, I want the newsletter to do things as simple as helping a patient ask the right questions, and as cutting-edge as an investigative news report.  I think you’ll like it and, to try to ensure that you do, there will be two email links, topicsuggestions@askmemd.com and comments@askmemd.com

To start out, I’ll focus on my major interests:

  1. Moderation in medicine
  2. Sensible medical practice, and how you, as patients, will know you are receiving that level of care.
  3. Ethical medical care, both in practice and in the financial realm (and I think you will find these newsletter items particularly interesting).
  4. How patients can get the most out of their medical care experience and how this will make the doctor’s efforts more efficient.

Finally, I will combine my own views and success in the areas of fitness and weight loss each month to suggest practical and easily understandable approaches to success in sports, weight loss, appearance, and, I hope for you and myself, longevity.
